The 2008 NICHE Conferences were held in Philadelphia with over 500 participants!
We are grateful to the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing for their co-sponsorship of these conferences. The Penn Center for Gerontologic Nursing Science provided Penn Faculty for the Keynote Address for each of our 3 conferences: Leadership, Best Clinical Practices, and User.
The NICHE Leadership Conference
This is a two-day program providing an overview of implementation strategies for bringing NICHE to new hospitals. Led by Dr. Elizabeth Capezuti, Co-director, Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, and Dr. Marie Boltz, this program also features experienced NICHE site representatives and healthcare experts. Topics of discussion include: the NICHE Tool Kit, an overview of NICHE models, staff education, the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile and other clinical, financial, and organizational measurement approaches to evaluate program effectiveness.

Neville E Strumpf, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Edith Clemmer Steinbright Professor in Gerontology, and Director of the Center for Gerontologic Nursing Science at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing provided the Keynote Address at the 2008 NICHE Leadership Conference during the Pre-Conference Reception on Sunday, February 17, 2008.
The NICHE Best Clinical Practices Conference

This conference provides cutting-edge, research-based best nursing practices linking national research to direct care. Seen here on the right (with Dr. Marie Boltz, NICHE Practice Director), Sarah Kagan, PhD, FAAN, RN, Professor of Gerontological Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, the Keynote Speaker, described how to embed NICHE principles into oncologic nursing practice. Dr. Kagan also holds a secondary faculty appointment is in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery, where she consults on clinical research and the management of patients who have head and neck cancers and are suffering complex wounds and other symptoms.
2008 NICHE User Conference
More than 250 experienced NICHE participants attended the NICHE User conference, which provides innovative and practical approaches to strengthen implementation of NICHE. Topics of discussion include strategies for moving forward including: retention of the older nurse, regionalization and integration, use of patient/family councils, and more.
Dr. Lois K Evans
Lois K Evans, PhD, FAAN, RN, the van Ameringen Professsor in Nursing Excellence and Chair of the Family and Community Health Division at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing was the Keynote Speaker for the 2008 NICHE User Conference. She inspired NICHE users with her talk, “Improving Mental Health Services for the Older Adult.”
