It is with pleasure that the NICHE program of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing of the New York University College of Nursing offers the GRN Core Curriculum. This new series of GRN materials is designed for use by those at NICHE sites who train nurses in best practices for older hospitalized adults.

The GRN Core Curriculum is based on the book, Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice, edited by Elizabeth Capezuti, DeAnne Zwicker, Mathy Mezey, Terry Fulmer, Deanna Gray-Miceli, and Malvina Kluger. This third edition published in 2008 includes the most current evidence-based nursing protocols known to experts.

Getting Started

The GRN Training Core Curriculum is now available online to NICHE sites via members only access. Please visit Join NICHE for more information on becoming one of more than 270 hospitals and health systems who are systematically developing and implementing practices and models to provide excellent care to older adults.

Here are the materials that NICHE sites need to get started with the GRN Core Curriculum

The central element of the 2008 GRN Core Curriculum is a series of 14 content modules, which include PowerPoint teaching slide lectures based on relevant book chapters. This curriculum includes a total of 20 hours of instruction. Each module will contain: a set of fully scripted PowerPoint teaching slide lectures, handouts that include applicable tables from within the chapter, pertinent issues of the Try This Series, and a post test.

Each module includes a variety of materials which may be downloaded by clicking on each item to the right. These materials include:

  • Set of fully scripted PowerPoint teaching slide lectures
  • Handouts which include:
    • Applicable tables from within the chapter(s)
    • Case examples provided at the end of the chapter(s)
  • Pertinent issues of the Try This Series
  • Post test

Each slide lecture includes learning objectives, topic significance, risk factors, consequences, national and professional guidelines, assessment parameters, nursing strategies, and expected clinical competencies. In addition, one slide outlines free, on-line resources from the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing. All nurses are encouraged to access these online resources for additional content and application to individual specialties. Please note that levels of evidence for interventions included in the slides may be found within the text of the chapters and are not listed in the slides. In addition, you are directed to the book chapters for a comprehensive list of references and resources as well as a nursing standard of practice protocol.

A complete description of the GRN Core Curriculum and details of its use may be found in The NICHE Planning and Implementation Guide. Chapter four of this guide, Developing and Expanding the Geriatric Nursing Knowledge Base, provides details about the scope, content, logistics, and evaluation of a comprehensive geriatric nursing education program. Please review chapter four as well as Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice and the GRN Core Curriculum materials in advance to determine their best use within your program.
